Neuroblastoma Symptoms in child

Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer in children younger than 5 years. These cancers are mostly found around the adrenal gland. It  can be detected via ultrasound when the baby is still in the womb.

Besides, the cancer can appear in some parts of the body, if in the stomach it will be in the form of mass in the stomach, you can feel the cancer if you touch it. This cancer can also cause bone pain if it has spread.

When present in the spine, it may compress the spinal cord and result in rapid paralysis. When spreading on the bone it can cause an unprovoked fracture, without feeling pain so that the sufferer limps suddenly.

Symptoms depend on the origin of the tumor and the extent of its spread. The initial symptoms are usually an enlarged abdomen, full stomach and abdominal pain. 

Symptoms may also be associated with tumor spread:
  • The spread of cancer to the bone can result in the appearance of bone pain.
  • The spread of cancer to the bone marrow leads to a reduction in platelet counts to the child's bruising, anemia resulting from a deficiency of red blood cells, and vulnerable to infection by lack of white blood cells.
  • Cancer that has spread to the skin can cause the formation of bumps in the skin.
  • The spread of cancer to the lungs results in respiratory distress.

The spread of cancer to the spinal cord may lead to weakness in the arms and legs.
About 90% of neuroblastoma produce hormones (eg epinephrine, which can cause increased heart rate and anxiety).

Other symptoms that may arise, among others:
  • The skin looks pale
  • Black circles appear around the eyes
  • Diarrhea
  • Excessive tiredness for weeks or months
  • Excessive sweating
  • Fussy
  • Malaise lasts for weeks or months
  • Uncontrolled eye movements

Cancer in children cannot be prevented because of risk factors and the cause is not known. 

Therefore, parents and health workers need to be aware of the symptoms of cancer in children, especially children aged less than a year cannot complain of pain that he felt. If identified early, the chances to cure the cancer is bigger.
